This web site is dedicated to the men and the families who played, coached, and ran Negro League Baseball from 1885 to 1960. Theirs is the story of great baseball and of life in a divided society. In part, it is the story of America itself. Teachers can use the information on this site to teach the powerful lessons of history, sports, segregation, and the triumph of spirit to future generations. Students will find it strange that at a time in our past some of our greatest athletes were forced to play in a separate league because of the color of their skin. Despite the ugliness of racism and segregation that forced the existence of the Negro Leagues, the game they played was a beautiful celebration of the sport. The great stories that are told here make one sorry, not for those who couldn’t play in the major leagues, but for those who never got to see the legendary games played. |
