Mrs. Katie George
Biology Instructor
Welcome to Biology 1! This class is an introductory to life science course. It is a one-year required laboratory course designed to give a broad overview of the living world! We are engaged in many daily activities, projects and laboratories (including dissections!) that are designed to give my students a better understanding of diversity among organisms and the function of various biological systems. Topics include cellular structure and function, genetics, evolution, ecology, and taxonomy. During April, most students enrolled in Biology 1 will take the Life Science portion of the Kansas State Assessment test. One of my major goals of Biology is to help students see the connection in what they are learning to life in the real world. Students have many opportunities to journal about their real world observations and find current news articles about the topics we are studying.
College Biology is a dual credit course with JCCC. Students can earn a 3-credit lecture and 1 credit lab by enrolling with JCCC. Students in this course follow the curriculum designated by JCCC and topics also include cellular structure and function, genetics, evolution, ecology, and taxonomy. My goal of this class is get students more prepared for their college experience by engaging in many higher-level thinking activities. Students are challenged by 4 quarter exams and a comprehensive final. They are also active in weekly laboratories and research activities.
