Little School on the Prairie Celebrates Kansas Day

Prairie Creek students participated in a number of activities to commemorate the 150th birthday of Kansas. Kansas became a state on January 29, 1861 so students dressed the part by donning bonnets, cowboy hats, petticoats and other pioneer wear.

Students also took part in a cake-decorating contest in which each student drew a picture that represents Kansas. Judges chose one winner from each class to have their illustration transferred to a sheet cake. Winning pictures included state symbols like the meadowlark and the ornate box turtle as well as pictures of tornados and log cabins. To see the pictures, visit the PCES Media Gallery. Each class enjoyed eating the cakes during their lunch Friday.

A special school project is now underway in honor of this Sesquicentennial of Kansas. Art instructor Angie Schnetzler is teaching students the pioneer craft of quilting. Each student will be responsible for completing a quilt square with a geometric pattern then blocks will be pieced together and then finally quilted. We anxiously await the final product!

They had "snow" much fun!

How do you turn a blanket of snow into the three R’s? Students in Mrs. Joeckel’s kindergarten and Mrs. Moore’s and Mrs. Fursman’s first grade classes did just that. Instead of telling the children to stay out of the snow, teachers encouraged students to use problem-solving skills to build snowmen. Each team brought essential items to outfit their snowman and used cooperative learning to accomplish the goal. After the project was concluded, the students wrote about their experience. What a fun day to be a student at PCES!

PCES Students Learn About America's Heroes

As United States citizens at home and abroad prepare to celebrate Veteran’s Day on Nov. 11th, students at Prairie Creek Elementary School (PCES) learned more about being a soldier from Tech.
He gave a presentation to all of the fourth and fifth graders in the library in honor of the upcoming Veteran's Day. Breyfogle showed pictures of all the different airplanes he works with, made a ready-to-eat meal that the soldiers make three times a day when deployed, dressed students in protective gear including a chemical suit, and showed a real parachute pack.

He also visited classrooms throughout the school, answered questions from students, visited them at lunch, and interacted with them at recess. The PCES Super Heroes (the school’s awesome students) even wrote letters and drew pictures for the soldiers in Afghanistan that Breyfogle will be hand-delivering!

He joined the United States Air Force exactly 10 years from the date that he spent at PCES, and has another ten years to go before retirement. The PCES school community wishes Breyfogle and his crew its sincerest appreciation of all of their efforts, as well as thoughts and prayers as they depart on Friday, November 5th for Afghanistan. The crew will be serving there until mid-January.
