Updated: Crisis Management Plan for Student Transportation

Student safety is always a top priority at Spring Hill USD 230. Have you ever wondered how a student transportation crisis is handled? The Spring Hill School District administrators and AppleBus Student Transportation Company have been working to update our Crisis Management Plan for Student Transportation. Dr. Joe Meyers, Director of Human Resources and Education Services said, "The current crisis manual needed to be updated for our current bus system and rules. This guideline is very specific about what procedure is taken following a bus accident, whether it is an injury accident or non-injury accident."

Staff are trained every year on procedures to follow from tornados to fires to intruders to violence. The district and each school building have crisis manuals. The same is true of the crisis plan for student transportation. Liane Penichet, AppleBus Transportation Manager, stated, "We work very hard to make every trip for students a safe one and we plan for those incidents that we hope never happen." Dr. Bart Goering, Superintendent of Schools explained: "The district works together with local law enforcement and emergency preparedness officials to insure the community’s most precious resource, our children, are save and secure."

Welcome from the Superintendent

Welcome to the Spring Hill School District. Every new school year gives the parents, staff and community another chance to work together to make sure all students achieve and are prepared to be successful. The 2008-2009 school year promises to be very exciting with new programs for students, excellent new and returning teachers and a very strong support staff dedicated to our students’ learning.

New this year is the virtual High School that offers students additional advanced placement classes and vocational/technical opportunities that combine anytime-anyplace learning with excellent teachers who care about students. Experts predict the by 2018 50% of all high school classes will be offered on line. Spring Hill School District, under the leadership and direction of the Spring Hill School Board, has soared ahead of other districts to offer our students these advanced opportunities now.

Our biggest challenge is preparing students for the future. We don’t know what the world will look like when today’s students enter the workforce, but we need to prepare them with life skills that will aid them throughout their lives.

We can’t do it alone. We know that involved parents can make a substantial difference in the academic life of their children and in our school and community. The entire school community has a role in play in supporting parental engagement in our schools. Please do all you can to maintain positive, regular and open communication between parents and school staff throughout the year.

Spring Hill School District serves the communities of Spring Hill, Olathe and Overland Park, Kansas as well as rural Johnson and Miami Counties. Our business leaders from all of our communities recognize the importance of education and have been very supportive of our district in many ways.

You are invited to visit your school often and check our website for updated information. The calendar is loaded with activities and opportunities for involvement. Please give me a call if I can be of assistance to you.

-- Barton L. Goering, Ph.D.
