New Greenhouse Gives Students a Chance to Grow

May 11, 2010

It won’t be long before Prairie Creek Elementary students have the chance to be hands-on in the school’s new greenhouse. Scheduled for completion in late May, the greenhouse project is being funded through a $6,000 grant from the NAAE/Campbell Soup Company, a $500 donation from the Prairie Creek PTO, and a generous donation from Murray Concrete.  The project was initiated by the Spring Hill Agriculture Education program as the group continues to enhance the Partners for Active Learning Support (PALS) mentoring program at Prairie Creek Elementary. This work included developing the new horticulture/greenhouse construction and designing curriculum appropriate for elementary students.

The project will enhance 21st Century skills of students by incorporating career and technical education standards, as well as the “learning by doing” philosophy of agricultural education. This project will also incorporate service-learning activities, such as May Day Baskets and “Green Thumb” sustainable communities’ projects.
