Bullying Program
At Spring Hill High School, in conjunction with the school’s commitment to a safe and enjoyable learning experience, administrators and staff value and respect every individual and do not tolerate bullying behavior. In accordance with state and district policies, and as noted in the SHHS student handbook, Spring Hill High School initiated a Bully Prevention program (based upon the internationally-recognized Olweus bully prevention model) designed to mitigate bullying behavior at the high school and during school-sponsored activities. Bullying behavior can be defined as intentional, aggressive actions over a period of time that creates an intimidating, threatening or abusive environment for a student or staff member. These actions can be verbal or non-verbal and constitute a physical and/or emotional harm to persons or things.
SHHS staff members address these expectations with students at the beginning of each school year and initiate a discussion of appropriate behavior during the school’s LINKS program (a transitional program for freshman). Utilizing posters throughout the facility and student news broadcasts, students are constantly reminded of their obligations to support one another and report bullying to the staff and administration if they feel they have witnessed or experienced bullying behavior. In the infrequent instances where bullying behavior is observed, trained staff initiates anti-bullying procedures and administrators apply appropriate administrative review and corrective action in line with the school’s multi-tiered bully prevention consequence response matrix. In order to affect positive outcomes in students’ lives, SHHS Bronco counselors use reflective materials to assist and review student behaviors for both victims and bullies.
If you suspect that your student is experiencing bullying behavior or would like to know more about the school’s bully prevention program, please call 913-592-7299 and ask to speak to an administrator.
