A Few Statistics

The Spring Hill, Kansas School District has been recognized nationally for its academic and technology programs.

2,634 students.

6 schools including 3 elementary (preschool through Grade 5), 1 middle school (Grades 6 through 8), and 1 high school (Grade 9 through 12), and a virtual high school.

Approximately 325 employees including teachers, nurses, classified and administrators.

About 70% of the faculty hold Masters Degrees or higher and have an average of 15 years experience.

Excellent Pupil -Teacher Ratios.

High school students receive college credit via the Johnson County Community College.

Approximately 80% of students continue their education after graduation.

Computer labs in all schools; computer ratio of 1 computer to 1.7 students.

Internet in all classrooms and e-mail for staff and students. 

Your Board of Education

Your board of Education, composed of seven unpaid local citizens elected by patrons in the district.  The Board sets policies by which the schools operate and approves hiring faculty and staff to administer these policies. Board meetings, open to the public, are usually held at 7:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month Spring Hill Elementary School, 300 S Webster, Spring Hill, Kansas.

Accreditation of Schools

The Spring Hill School District meets all requirements for accreditation by the Kansas State Department of Education.

Teacher Qualifications

All teachers must meet state certification requirements, and hold at least a Bachelor's Degree.  All teachers must complete additional study to retain certification.

Enrollment

Enrollment is to be completed during the month of August.  Information concerning enrollment may be obtained from the Board of Education Office or at each school.

Student Entrance Requirements

Age

Pupils enrolling in kindergarten must be five years old on or before August 31 of the year in which they enroll.  Pupils entering school for the first time at the first grade level must be six years old on or before August 31 of the current year.  Age verification is required.  Kansas law makes no provision for  waiving student age requirements.

Residence

All children who have an actual legal residence in the school district and meet the legal age requirements, are entitled to attend the public schools unless excused, excluded, or suspended in accordance with the terms of Kansas law and policies of the Board.  Children in grades K through 12, living outside the school district, will not be admitted to district schools unless they meet the criteria of USD 230 Policy JBC, or by special permission by the superintendent of schools.

Health

All students enrolled in the Spring Hill School District must have certification from a licensed physician or local health department stating that they have received (or are in the process of receiving and will have completed within ninety days after admission to the school) tests and inoculations as are deemed necessary by the Secretary of the State Department of Health and Environment.  For further information, call a school nurse at one of the schools.

Attendance Areas

Depending upon available room, all students (K-5) living north of 191st street will attend classes at Hilltop Elementary School.  Students (K-5) living south of 191st street will attend school at Spring Hill Elementary School.  Students in Grades 6-8 will attend the Spring Hill Middle School.  Students in grades 9-12 will attend Spring Hill High School.

Transportation

School transportation services will be provided within the limitations of available resources for transporting students to and from school and for transporting students to and from curricular and extracurricular activities sponsored by the schools. Transportation to and from school will be provided for students under five categories: 1. All students living 2.5 miles or more from schools and within the Spring Hill School District boundaries will be transported without charge; 2. Students living less than 2.5 miles from school may be transported to and from school under the District’s “Pay to Ride” Program; 3. Students living within the Spring Hill School District boundaries and approved for free lunch through the National School Lunch program qualify for free transportation to and from school. Forms for approval for the National School Lunch program are available at all schools; 4. Students with certain disabilities may be transported without charge; 5. Textbooks and Supplies

Spring Hill schools have a textbook rental plan.  Students are required to pay for additional items used for individual projects, such as in woodworking, arts, etc.

School Maintenance

U.S.D. #230 provides a continuous maintenance program for all district buildings. A partial refurbishment program is performed in each attendance center annually.

Library System

Each school in the district operates a library serving all students. The library collections include film strips, a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction books, periodicals, and reference books. Each library has an Internet access.

Extra Curricular Activities and Athletics

The middle school and high school offer a variety of activities and athletics for all students. The district is a member of the Frontier League as well as the Kansas State High School Activities Association.

Curriculum Highlights

Art - Middle school and high school students may select from several art courses.

Business Education - The business program offers a work study program preparing students for a career and job. "On the Job" training provides students an opportunity to work in an office during school.  Student receive credit in both programs. Courses offered are Business Law, Business Concepts, Accounting and Computerized Accounting, Word Processing, Desktop Publishing, and Office Technology.

Computer Education -  Students in Grades K-12 have computers available in computer labs. Approximately 850 computers are distributed throughout the district for student use. The high school offers courses in Computer Applications and Basic Pascal for college credit.

Driver's Education -Summer instruction is offered.

Foreign Language - French and Spanish instruction is offered in the district.

Home Economics - Such courses as Food & Nutrition, Family Living, Parenting and Child Development, and Consumer Education and Practices are offered at the high school and middle school.

Tech Ed - Courses provide opportunities to learn the latest technology.

Language Arts - Basic and specialized language arts courses of varying lengths are available in the areas of English, speech, drama, writing, and journalism.

Mathematics - While emphasizing fundamental math skills from elementary through high school, the mathematics department also offers many specialized courses such as Technical Math.

Music - Vocal music is taught at all levels.  Instrumental music including band and strings is offered in grades 5-12.

Physical Education, Health, & Safety - Physical education teachers stress movement skills, rhythms, and physical fitness on the elementary level.  Fitness, "lifetime" Sport Activities, Health and Safety are continually emphasized.

Science - Elementary and middle school students are offered basic science courses.  High school classes range from basic to specialized offerings including Chemistry, Physics, Applied Biology, Chemistry,  and Principals of Technology.  The high school science department contains a new computer science lab with technology that includes CD ROM.

Social Science - A wide selection of required and elective courses of various lengths including Government, World and American History, Psychology, and Sociology typify the social science department offerings.

Special Services - The Special Services program is dedicated to providing an appropriate educational program for the exceptional child in the least restrictive environment and includes many services and programs.  

College Now/Quick Step - Three college credit programs, College Now, Quick Step, and Quick Step Plus,  provide opportunities for high school students to pursue advanced course work and receive both high school and college credit.
