New Immunization Requirements for 2009-10 School Year

Each year, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment issues its updated immunization requirements for any child attending school. Immunizations are used to protect children from once-common highly infectious diseases. The requirements for the 2009-10 school year are made based on the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations. These include:
  • Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (DTap): Five doses are required. Four doses are acceptable if dose #4 is given on or after the child’s fourth birthday. A booster dose of Tdap is required at age 11.
  • Poliomyelitis (IPV/OPV): Four doses are required. Three doses are acceptable if dose 3 is given on or after the child’s fourth birthday.
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR): Two doses are required.
  • Hepatitis B: Three doses are required through grade 9.*
  • Varicella (chickenpox): Two doses are required for kindergarten; one dose is required for grades 1-9* unless there is a history of varicella documented by a licensed physician. Two doses are currently recommended by the ACIP for all ages.
  • Haemophilus influenzae type B (HiB): Three doses are required for children less than five years of age in any preschool or childcare program operated by the school.
  • Pneumococcal conjugate (PCV7): Four doses are required for children less than five years of age in any preschool or childcare program operated by the school.
  • Hepatitus A: Two doses are required for children less than five years of age in a preschool or childcare program operated by the school.

It is important to note that all students will be required to have three doses of Hepatitis B and two doses of varicella for the 2010-11 school year. If you would like more information about immunization requirements, you are welcome to contact your school nurse.
