National Honor Society

Leadership – Scholarship – Service.

The National Honor Society is a prestigious organization predicated on service to the school and community by students who exhibit the highest standards of leadership, scholarship and service. Those students inducted into the organization must have demonstrated Leadership, Scholarship and Service throughout their high school matriculation and be willing to continue that service through their graduation.

The standards are high. Each potential candidate (a second semester Junior or Senior) must achieve and maintain a 3.6 or higher GPA, have participated in service-oriented activities within school or the community, and demonstrated leadership through school or community activities. Additionally, each student must be in good standing with no current adverse administrative or legal restrictions. Following the completion and submission of student activity information packets and letters of recommendation, a Faculty Council then meets to decide which students have sufficient merit to be inducted into the organization. During this selection process, the student’s identity is withheld from the Council to ensure complete anonymity and remove any potential bias. Candidates then participate in a Tapping Ceremony before the student body and the formal Candle Lighting Induction Ceremony before family and friends.

This year, of thirty-one students eligible, twenty-four submitted completed packets and seventeen were inducted into NHS, joining the 27 present members. NHS 2007-2008 will seek to increase it’s community service by participating in several activities to include making holiday cards for senior citizens, participating in assisting local animal shelters with stranded or distressed animals, sponsoring the annual SHHS Spring Blood Drive, and assisting SHHS with recycling programs.

Potential applicants, parents, or any organization seeking service volunteers are welcome to contact the NSH faculty sponsor, Mr. Shea, at 592-7354 or by email sheat@usd230.org with any questions throughout this process.
