About the SHMS IMC:

Spring Hill Middle School IMC

Entrance and OPAC stations

The SHMS Library or Instructional Media Center (IMC) houses all types of educational AV equipment and materials as well as over 12,800 books and magazines for informational and leisure reading for students and staff.  The media center has flexible scheduling, which allows students and staff to use the library at any time and enables classes to have more flexible times when signing up for research.  The IMC is completely automated with four online public access catalogs or OPAC stations.  Seating capacity is about sixty. Students are allowed to have three books checked out at a time but are given special permission to check out more if needed for research.  Reference material and magazines may be checked out for three days and books may be checkout for three weeks.  Students may renew items up to three times.

Library Media Specialists

Miss Sims is the librarian/media specialist and has been employed
at SHMS for 19 years. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education at Pittsburg State University and Master’s Degree in Library Science and Information Management from Emporia State University.

Mrs. Sobotka is the library aide.  This is her 6th year in that position and her 14th year with the school district.

The IMC serves more than 475 patrons each year and circulates, on the average, 41.25 items per patron during the school year.  Each year the library handles over 18,000 transactions.  All six-grade students come to the library at least once a week, usually on Thursdays, with their language arts teachers in order to check out books.  The library is also open each day during homeroom for students to check out as well as after school.

The 7th Annual SHMS Foozles Book Fair will be held in the library from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. on Thursday and Friday, May 1st and May 2nd.  Foozles offers great books at greatly reduced prices!  This would be a wonderful opportunity for students to pick out some books to read over the summer months.

Foozles gives 10% of the book fair profits back the SHMS Library in the form of books to add to the shelves so all students will have access to them.  Thanks for supporting the book fair and our library! Cash, checks, and major credit cards will be accepted!

SHMS students participate in voting for the William Allen White Children’s Book Award.  All students will be encouraged to participate in reading at least three books from the William Allen White Book Award Master List.  They may vote for their favorite book by April 2008.  The William Allen White Children’s Book Award program is  the oldest state reading program in the United States and is proud to have one of the highest student participation rates.  This year the program celebrates it’s 55th anniversary.
